I am a professional musician with over 40 years experience playing guitar. After beginning guitar lessons at age 10, I started teaching it at age 13. And although I haven't taught guitar every year since then, I have always loved helping people reach their musical goals. I joined Motown Records as a staff-songwriter when I was 21, and made two albums for them, learning more and more with each experience.

In 1984-85, I studied guitar and composition at the Dick Grove School of Music in Studio City, California, and I continue to use many of their techniques in my teaching today.

I teach both beginning and intermediate levels of guitar to students in the Los Angeles area. I also teach at Old Town Music in Pasadena on Mondays and Wednesdays.

I believe that each student is unique in what he/she needs to concentrate on, so I do not follow one rigid lesson plan. One student may want to become a songwriter; another may want to play just for fun; and still another may want to develop into a killer soloist. Each student's lesson plan is designed to bring the individual student to a higher degree of technique, knowledge and enjoyment as quickly as possible.

I believe playing "by ear" is very important, and I teach eartraining to all my students. This includes the ability to recognize chords and chord patterns as the student listens so they can pick up their instrument and play what they've heard. Another important benefit of this eartraining is the ability to transpose songs into another key on the spot. These abilities are within reach of all students.

I believe that learning songs is one of the best ways to improve playing and develop a personal style. I will teach each student to play the songs that they want to learn; and if the level of technique has not yet been reached, I will teach the techniques that will make it possible.

The cost is $30 for a 1/2 hour lesson, and $60 for a 1-hour lesson. The first lesson is always a 1-hour period so I can get a feel for the kind of curriculum that is needed. If any of this sounds good to you, e-mail me or drop me a line at P.O. Box 411571, Los Angeles, CA 90041.
